The best Oklahoma implementations of environmentally friendly devices and techniques will be showcased Thursday during the inaugural Henry Bellmon Awards.

The awards gala, named after the late Oklahoma governor, was put together by Sustainable Tulsa and the Tulsa Southside Rotary Club and Foundation to raise awareness of sustainable techniques and honor those who incorporate them.

Corey Williams, director of Sustainable Tulsa, said award nominees are a mix of pioneering individuals, nonprofits and businesses that are integrating green practices into their work.

“It’s really exciting to see some larger businesses adding sustainability to the core values of their company,” she said.

Awards presented include the Quality of Life for All Award, given for efforts that improve the quality of life for the community as a whole, the Responsible Economic Growth Award for healthy, local-centric and green economic growth, and the Environmental Stewardship Award for protecting natural resources.

One of the three winners will receive the Henry Bellmon Award for sustainability leadership in a balanced approach in all three key areas.

The panel of judges includes Dave Lawson, chairman of the University of Tulsa Board of Trustees; Dean Van Trease, president emeritus Tulsa Community College; Oklahoma Secretary of State Susan Savage, former mayor of Tulsa; Brett Fidler, sustainability director for the city; William Focht, professor of environmental studies at Oklahoma State University; Ann McFerron, Bellmon’s daughter and co-owner of Turtle Rock Farm; Jim Cameron, president of Cameron Glass Inc.; Bob McKenzie, president of Rotary Club Tulsa; and Felicia Collins Correia, CEO of the Tulsa YWCA.

Tickets for the event are $125 and available from Williams at 808-6576.
