James E. “Jim” Horne, president and CEO of the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture, has taken home the first Henry Bellmon Award for exemplary sustainability leadership.

The award was presented at the inaugural Henry Bellmon Awards gala Thursday at the Mayo Hotel. The competition, named after the late governor, was put together by Sustainable Tulsa and the Tulsa Southside Rotary Club and Foundation to raise awareness of sustainable techniques and honor those who incorporate them.

Three awards were given in different areas of environmentally friendly practices.

In addition to the overall award, Horne won the Quality of Life for All Award for his work with the Kerr Center, which enhances the efforts of Oklahomans who have a vision of an agricultural system that is not only profitable but respects the environment, competition officials said.

The center, a nonprofit educational foundation established in 1985, is located on the historic Kerr Ranch near Poteau.

Goodwill Industries of Tulsa received the Responsible Economic Growth Award for taking items out of the waste stream and using the revenues generated from them to create a significant economic impact on the community while providing work opportunities and job training for people with disabilities or other employment barriers.

The Metropolitan Environmental Trust earned the Environmental Stewardship Award for providing more than 100 jobs to individuals with disabilities, recycling more than 48 million pounds of materials, cleaning more than 70,000 households of hazardous materials through the Fairgrounds Pollutant Disposal program, distributing more than 75,000 seedling trees to residents and recruiting more than 40,000 volunteers over the years to pick up litter.

Ron Jones, president and co-founder of Green Builder Media, was the keynote speaker at the event.
